RESUMO

The influence of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a pump pulse on the multioctave supercontinuum (SC) generation in a gas-filled anti-resonant hollow-core fiber (AR HCF) by soliton self-compression (SSC) has been explored. We have shown an octave-wide third harmonic generation (THG) in the visible-to-near-infrared range during the pulse compression down to a sub-cycle duration. The CEP of a multi-cycle pump pulse provides control of interference between the third harmonic (TH) and the SC that indicates the coherent synthesis of a sub-cycle pulse with a duration of about 0.4 optical cycles and a peak power of more than 2 GW at the fiber output.

RESUMO

The first measurement of lepton-jet momentum imbalance and azimuthal correlation in lepton-proton scattering at high momentum transfer is presented. These data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are corrected for detector effects using an unbinned machine learning algorithm (multifold), which considers eight observables simultaneously in this first application. The unfolded cross sections are compared with calculations performed within the context of collinear or transverse-momentum-dependent factorization in quantum chromodynamics as well as Monte Carlo event generators.

Here we report new data describing the biodiversity of phytobenthic communities based on DNA-metabarcoding using the 18S rDNA marker and the Illumina MiSeq system. The study was initiated due to the blooming of f ilamentous algae (mainly of the genus Spirogyra) and cyanobacteria in the coastal zone of Lake Baikal under climate change and anthropogenic impact. The composition and taxonomic diversity of algae and other organisms associated with them on different sites of Lake Baikal (near Bolshoi Ushkaniy Island, in Listvennichny Bay) and in the Kaya (within the city of Irkutsk, located in the same drainage basin as Lake Baikal) were determined using DNAmetabarcoding. About 15 thousand reads of the 18S rRNA marker were obtained by applying NGS (next-generation sequencing). The species of algae dominating in the number of reads, as well as the diff icult-to-identify taxa (Stramenopiles, Alveolata, Euglenozoa, Chromista, Rhizaria, Amoebozoa, etc.), which play an important role in the functioning and formation of the structure of algal communities, were revealed. The Shannon index of the communities studied ranges from 1.56 to 2.72. The advantages and weaknesses of using DNA-metabarcoding based on the 18S rRNA gene fragment for studying the structure of algal communities are shown. The advantage of this method is the possibility to more fully determine the diversity of eukaryotes taxa, which are diff icult to identify by morphology, without involving a large number of specialists, while the disadvantage of the method is the distortion that may occur during the PCR. Here, ways of solving this problem are proposed. The results of the study show that the analysis of the minor component of the eukaryotic community in samples (organisms with low biomass) consisting of a mixture of multicellular and unicellular organisms requires a read-depths of at least 100,000 sequences per sample. In general, the DNA-metabarcoding method is recommended for studying the structure of algal communities and eukaryotes associated with them.

Spectral analysis of high-order harmonics generated by ultrashort mid-infrared pulses in molecular nitrogen reveals well-resolved signatures of inverse Raman scattering, showing up near the frequencies of prominent vibrational transitions of nitrogen molecules. When tuned on a resonance with the v'=0→v''=0 pathway within the B3Πg→C3Πu second positive system of molecular nitrogen, the eleventh harmonic of a 3.9 µm, 80 fs driver is shown to acquire a distinctive antisymmetric spectral profile with red-shifted bright and blue-shifted dark features as indicators of stimulated Raman gain and loss. This high-harmonic setting extends the inverse Raman effect to a vast class of strong-field light-matter interaction scenarios.

Multimodal nonlinear microscopy combining third-harmonic generation (THG) with two- and three-photon-excited fluorescence (2PEF and 3PEF) is shown to provide a powerful resource for high-fidelity imaging of nucleoli and nucleolar proteins. We demonstrate that, with a suitably tailored genetically encoded fluorescent stain, the 2PEF/3PEF readout from specific nucleolar proteins can be reliably detected against the extranucleolar 2PEF/3PEF signal, enabling high-contrast imaging of the key nucleolar ribosome biogenesis components, such as fibrillarin. THG is shown to provide a versatile readout for unstained nucleolus imaging in a vast class of biological systems as different as neurons in brain slices and cultured HeLa cells.

Ultrafast ionization of a gas medium driven by ultrashort midinfrared laser pulses provides a source of bright ultrabroadband radiation whose spectrum spans across the entire microwave band, reaching for the sub-gigahertz range. We combine multiple, mutually complementary detection techniques to provide an accurate polarization-resolved characterization of this broadband output as a function of the gas pressure. At low gas pressures, the lowest-frequency part of this output is found to exhibit a drastic enhancement as this field builds up its coherence, developing a well-resolved emission cone, dominated by a radial radiation energy flux. This behavior of the intensity, coherence, and polarization of the microwave output is shown to be consistent with Cherenkov-type radiation by ponderomotively driven plasma currents.

Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) {Ca8H2(PO4)6×5H2O] has attracted increasing attention over the last decade as a transient intermediate to the biogenic apatite for bone engineering and in studies involving the processes of pathological calcification. In this work, OCP powders obtained by hydrolysis of dicalcium phosphate dehydrate were subjected to X- and γ-ray irradiation and studied by means of stationary and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance at 9, 36 and 94 GHz microwave frequencies. Several types of paramagnetic centers were observed in the investigated samples. Their spectroscopic parameters (components of the g and hyperfine tensors) were determined. Based on the extracted parameters, the induced centers were ascribed to H0, CO33-, CO2- and nitrogen-centered (presumably NO32-) radicals. The spectroscopic parameters of the nitrogen-centered stable radical in OCP powders were found to be markedly different from those in hydroxyapatite. According to X-ray diffraction data, γ-ray irradiation allowed the phase composition of calcium phosphates to change; all minor phases with the exception of OCP and hydroxyapatite disappeared, while the OCP crystal lattice parameters changed after irradiation. The obtained results could be used for the tracing of mineralization processes from their initiation to completion of the final product, identification of the OCP phase, and to follow the influence of radiation processes on phase composition of calcium phosphates.

We show that a commonly accepted transparency threshold for a thin foil in a strong circularly polarized normally incident laser pulse needs a refinement. We present an analytical model that correctly accounts for laser absorption. The refined threshold is determined not solely by the laser amplitude, but by other parameters that are equally or even more important. Our predictions are in perfect agreement with particle-in-cell simulations. The refined criterion is crucial for configuring laser plasma experiments in the high-field domain. In addition, an opaque foil steepens the pulse front, which can be important for numerous applications.

RESUMO

Cooling of beams of gold ions using electron bunches accelerated with radio-frequency systems was recently experimentally demonstrated in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Such an approach is new and opens the possibility of using this technique at higher energies than possible with electrostatic acceleration of electron beams. The challenges of this approach include generation of electron beams suitable for cooling, delivery of electron bunches of the required quality to the cooling sections without degradation of beam angular divergence and energy spread, achieving the required small angles between electron and ion trajectories in the cooling sections, precise velocity matching between the two beams, high-current operation of the electron accelerator, as well as several physics effects related to bunched-beam cooling. Here we report on the first demonstration of cooling hadron beams using this new approach.

We report on the electric transport properties of Si heavily doped with Sb at concentration just below the insulator-to-metal transition in the temperature range 1.9-3.0 K for current density J < 0.2 A cm-2. The change in the sign of the temperature dependence of the differential resistivity [Formula: see text] was observed: the d[Formula: see text]/dT is positive if J < 0.045 A cm-2 whereas it becomes negative at J > 0.045 A cm-2. The effect is explained assuming the exchange by electrons between the upper Hubbard band (UHB) and the conduction band. The obtained J dependencies of the activation energy, nonequilibrium concentration, mobility and scattering time of the conduction electrons correspond well to this hypothesis. The reason for charge instability is the Coulomb repulsion between electrons occupying states both in the UHB and conduction band. The estimated J dependencies of the conduction electrons lifetime and concentration of the D- states in the UHB strongly supports this assumption.

We present brain imaging experiments on rat cortical areas, demonstrating that, when combined with a suitable high-brightness, cell-specific genetically encoded fluorescent marker, three-photon-excited fluorescence (3PEF), enables subcellular-resolution, cell-specific 3D brain imaging that is fully compatible and readily integrable with other nonlinear-optical imaging modalities, including two-photon-fluorescence and harmonic-generation microscopy. With laser excitation provided by sub-100-fs, 1.25-µm laser pulses, cell-specific 3PEF from astrocytes and their processes detected in parallel with a three-photon-resonance-enhanced third harmonic from blood vessels is shown to enable a high-contrast 3D imaging of gliovascular interfaces.

Coherent-wake plasma emission induced by ultrashort mid-infrared laser pulses on a solid target is shown to give rise to high-brightness, high-order harmonic radiation, offering a promising source of attosecond pulses and a probe for ultrafast subrelativistic plasma dynamics. With 80-fs, 0.2-TW pulses of 3.9-µm radiation used as a driver, optical harmonics up to the 34th order are detected, with their spectra stretching from the mid-infrared region to the extreme ultraviolet region. The harmonic spectrum is found to be highly sensitive to the chirp of the driver. Particle-in-cell analysis of this effect suggests, in agreement with the generic scenario of coherent-wake emission, that optical harmonics are radiated as trains of extremely short, attosecond ultraviolet pulses with a pulse-to-pulse interval varying over the pulse train. A positive chirp of the driver pulse can partially compensate for this variation in the interpulse separation, allowing harmonics of the highest orders to be generated in the plasma emission spectrum.

We demonstrate stain-free, high-contrast, subcellular-resolution imaging of astroglial cells using epi-detected third-harmonic generation (THG). The astrocyte-imaging capability of THG is verified by colocalizing THG images with fluorescence images of astrocytes expressing a genetically encodable fluorescent reporter. We show that THG imaging with an optimized point-spread function can reliably detect significant subcellular features of astrocytes, including cell nuclei, as well as the soma shape and boundaries.

RESUMO

We demonstrate the experimental feasibility of probing the fully nonperturbative regime of quantum electrodynamics with a 100 GeV-class particle collider. By using tightly compressed and focused electron beams, beamstrahlung radiation losses can be mitigated, allowing the particles to experience extreme electromagnetic fields. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations confirm the viability of this approach. The experimental forefront envisaged has the potential to establish a novel research field and to stimulate the development of a new theoretical methodology for this yet unexplored regime of strong-field quantum electrodynamics.

RESUMO

Polarization maps of high-order harmonics are shown to enable a full vectorial characterization of petahertz electron currents generated in a crystalline solid by an ultrashort laser driver. As a powerful resource of this methodology, analysis of energy-momentum dispersion landscapes, defined by the electron band structure, can help identify, as our analysis shows, special directions within the Brillouin zone that can provide a preferable basis for polarization-sensitive high-harmonic mapping of anisotropic petahertz photocurrents in solids.

The available literature reports only rare cases of injuries inflicted by the speargun shots. The last publication of this sort of which we are aware dates back to 1960. This article describes an example from the expert practice concerning the accident involving a wound caused by the speargun shot to a member of an amateur fishing party. The authors examined the weapon of injury (a 'Zelinka' speargun), the harpoon, its head, and fragments of the skin with the traces of the punctured wound obtained from the corpse of the victim. The investigative experiment included the underwater shooting from different distances with the use of a pork carcass as the target. The results of the comparative studies gave evidence of the possibility of formation of the wounds caused by exactly that harpoon, its head and cord which served as the weapons of the wound experienced by the victim. Moreover, the distance and the direction of the shot as well as a number of important concomitant circumstances of the accident were determined.

Quantitative characterization of dispersion near molecular resonances is difficult both conceptually and technically, as it requires systematic measurements of rapidly varying dispersion profiles across the edges of molecular absorption bands. Here, we show that this challenge can be confronted with an ultrafast spectrochronography technique that combines time-resolved four-wave mixing and cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating. We demonstrate that, with the spectrum of an ultrashort mid-infrared laser probe stretching across the edge of a molecular absorption band, the Wigner chronocyclic maps of such a probe reveal universal signatures of anomalous dispersion and help quantify such dispersion anomalies.

RESUMO

Reconnectable bundles consisting of thousands of optical fibers are shown to enable high-quality image transmission, offering a platform for the creation of implantable fiberscopes for minimally invasive in vivo brain imaging. Experiments on various lines of transgenic mice verify the performance of this fiberscope as a powerful tool for chronic in vivo neuroimaging using genetically encoded calcium indicators, neuronal activity markers as well as axon growth regulators and brain-specific protein drivers in deep regions of live brain.

Within the framework of the average approach and direct 3D PIC (particle-in-cell) simulations, we demonstrate that the gyrotrons operating in the regime of developed turbulence can sporadically emit "giant" spikes with intensities a factor of 100-150 greater than the average radiation power and a factor of 6-9 exceeding the power of the driving electron beams. Together with the statistical features such as a long-tail probability distribution, this allows the interpretation of generated spikes as microwave rogue waves. The mechanism of spikes formation is related to the simultaneous cyclotron interaction of a gyrating electron beam with forward and backward waves near the waveguide cutoff frequency as well as with the longitudinal deceleration of electrons.
